Where History Meets Science at Windermere School
3 February 2025
At Windermere School, we recently stumbled upon a remarkable piece of history that beautifully tied the past to the present. While exploring the Stannite archives, we uncovered a handwritten recipe book from 1985. This book was no ordinary collection of recipes; it was created by pupils of Windermere School (then St Anne’s) as part of a fundraising initiative to support famine relief in Africa. Each pupil contributed a cherished family recipe, and the books were sold to raise money for the cause.
Fast forward 40 years, and this precious relic became the centrepiece of a unique science lesson for our Year 5 pupils. Jane, our talented chef, selected one of the recipes to bake with the class. The chosen recipe, contributed by Lisa Barrow, provided an excellent way to explore the science of changing materials in an engaging and delicious way.
The experience was not only a fantastic learning opportunity for the children but also a meaningful connection to the generations of pupils who came before them. It was a moment to reflect on the values of community, creativity, and compassion that continue to define Windermere School today.
If you know Lisa Barrow, the author of the recipe, please get in touch so we can share this wonderful story with her!
