We are delighted to announce that this year’s Silver Duke of Edinburgh group has successfully completed their final expedition – a three-day canoe journey through the scenic yet challenging waters of Loch Ken and the River Dee. This adventure offered a rich introduction to Scottish canoe touring, with our participants navigating both rivers and flat water, and putting their skills to the ultimate test.

The expedition, a culmination of months of preparation, training and anticipation, was not without its trials. The group faced varied conditions, particularly on Thursday when strong winds turned the serene Loch Ken into a demanding waterway. Despite the weather’s efforts to challenge them, the team displayed remarkable resilience and teamwork, forging ahead with determination.

Traveling at times unaccompanied, they managed campsites, navigated their course and maintained their food and equipment. These responsibilities, while daunting, contributed significantly to their growth, fostering a sense of independence and confidence. The satisfaction of overcoming adversity and achieving their goals was evident in the smiles and camaraderie shared at the journey’s end.

We are immensely proud to report that every participant in this year’s Silver cohort passed their final expedition with flying colours. Their success is not only a testament to their perseverance but also to the comprehensive skills they have developed. They have demonstrated their ability to camp, cook, navigate and manage a three-day canoe journey effectively.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue supporting our participants as they work towards completing the other sections of their Silver Award – Physical, Voluntary and Skills. This expedition has laid a solid foundation for their continued growth and achievement in the Duke of Edinburgh programme.
