The Journey of Our Gold Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition
2 May 2024
Eleven ambitious students enrolled in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh scheme this year. Setting off from Ambleside last Friday, they embarked on a challenging three-day expedition on foot, each step bringing them closer to mastering essential skills for their final, potentially unaccompanied expedition. The skills include navigation, camp craft, incident management and their personal fitness.
Despite the initial weather forecast looking very mixed, the picturesque landscapes welcomed them with open arms, although the chilly overnight temperatures provided a true test of resilience.
Their route led them through breath-taking terrains, starting in Ambleside they walked over to Sykeside campsite next to Brothers Water.
Day two was challenging, with an ascent of Hart Crag via Hartsop above How and then over Fairfield and descending to Grisedale Hause, continuing on to Grasmere before reaching the serene Easedale Tarn for a memorable wild camp. On the final leg of their journey, they ventured unaccompanied, winding their way past the tranquil waters of Grasmere and Rydal Water, back to Ambleside. There were definitely lessons learnt, but they all did very well.
Their next chapter awaits in North Wales at the end of June, where they will embark on their final four-day, three-night expedition. For some, this journey marks the culmination of their Duke of Edinburgh Award journey, a testament to their dedication and effort throughout Year 12.
We wish them the best of luck as they continue to blaze trails and push boundaries, embodying the spirit of adventure and discovery. Stay tuned for more updates as they embark on their next adventure!
