Parent & Guardian Sailing Day

18 November 2024

On Sunday, 17 November, our school community came together for a memorable Parent & Guardian Sailing Day taught by our Sixth Form students! Despite the cold and grey weather, the enthusiasm and energy of everyone involved ensured the day was a resounding success.

The highlight of the event was watching our incredible Sixth Form students take the reins, confidently teaching their parents and guardians how to sail. This unique role reversal showcased their skills, leadership and the strong foundation of their time at school.

Mr. Platt, our Head of Outdoor Education, captured the spirit of the day perfectly:

“It feels rather odd standing on the jetty watching and not getting involved in the teaching. But it’s absolutely brilliant seeing talented, confident students getting the sailing boats ready, fuelling and preparing the safety boats, and then structuring the teaching themselves. We have three RYA Dinghy Instructors in our Sixth Form and a number of qualified powerboat drivers, all taught during their time at school.”

We also received some wonderful feedback from some of our lovely parents & guardians:

I had a wonderful morning and it was so good to be out on the water. It also opened my eyes to the experience our children are lucky enough to have through the exceptional work of the adventure team at Windermere.”

“The sixth formers did an excellent job, were professional and engaging and I felt very safe despite my initial nerves! Please pass on my thanks to them for a fabulous morning. I can’t wait for the next one (if they could warm the lake up a bit next time that would be appreciated!).”

“Please pass on my thanks to the Sixth formers who, despite the lack of wind (which perhaps was a good thing), kept a slightly unruly bunch occupied. The calm conditions allowed some gossiping time in the boat- a lovely opportunity to meet new people.”

“A massive thank you also to the supporting staff who were there (on a v cold Sunday morning) but did not interfere but let the young adults take responsibility and control.”

After a morning of fun (and perhaps a few splashes!), everyone gathered for a hearty lunch to warm up and share stories from the water. The proceeds from ticket sales will all go towards the recent renovation of the Sixth Form study centre, making the day not only enjoyable but impactful.

We are immensely proud of our talented Sixth Form students who managed Hodge Howe, the instruction and safety of families with ease. Their knowledge, teamwork and independence made the sure the session was enjoyed by all, despite the very cold weather!

A huge thank you to our staff and all the parents and guardians who joined us. We look forward to seeing you on the water again soon!
