MFL News: Celebrating Hispanic Day, European Day of Languages, and Language Learning Success
30 October 2024
Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad) – On October 12, we joined the global celebrations for Hispanic Day, a significant national holiday in Spain. Our Year 9 Spanish pupils, along with Mrs Sinclair, Mrs Dalzell and our Head of MFL Miss Hubner, marked the occasion with an exciting day of Spanish food and cultural quizzes. It was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to immerse themselves in Spanish culture, all while enjoying a fun and educational experience. Muchas gracias to Mrs Sinclair for organising such a wonderful event. Muy buen trabajo to everyone involved!
Halloween with Year 6 – In the lead-up to Halloween, our Year 6 pupils embraced the festive spirit during their French lessons at Browhead, our Senior School campus, preparing for the spooky season while continuing their French language studies. It’s fantastic to see our younger pupils making cultural connections through language.
European Day of Languages – As part of the celebrations, our Sixth Form tutor groups participated in a quiz that highlighted the diverse languages and cultures from around the world. Congratulations to Mr Western’s tutor group, who triumphed and took home a bag of international goodies from France, Poland, and Italy!
Additionally, Year 7 French and Spanish pupils created impressive posters promoting the importance of language learning. Our Sixth Form IBCP Language Development students had the tough task of judging the competition, ultimately selecting four winners—Millie, Siddhartha, Lucy and Rafi—and two runners-up, Algy and Finn. Well done to all our Year 7 pupils for their creativity and hard work!
This year, our Year 12 IBCP Language Development students have embarked on the exciting journey of learning Arabic and Italian at beginner levels, as well as intermediate German. Through this programme, they aim to enhance their linguistic skills, broaden their cultural understanding, and create a language portfolio that will serve them in future educational or career opportunities.
It’s been a busy and successful term for our MFL department so far, with pupils across all year groups demonstrating their commitment to language learning and cultural appreciation. Bravo to all!
