Year 7 Pop Art: Cartoons, Comics, and Big Bangs!
30 October 2024
This term, our Year 7 pupils have been diving into the bold and colourful world of pop art, channelling the style of the iconic artist Roy Lichtenstein. Known for his eye-catching comic strip paintings and dramatic use of colour, Lichtenstein brought everyday imagery to life, inspiring generations of artists with his unmistakable style. Born in New York City in 1923, he helped define the pop art movement with his vibrant, cartoon-inspired works, often featuring dramatic expressions, thought bubbles, and his trademark “Ben-Day dots,” which gave his pieces a dynamic, print-like texture.
In our Year 7 classes, pupils have been exploring Lichtenstein’s unique techniques and experimenting with colour, pattern, and expression. To recreate the look of those famous Ben-Day dots, they’ve used a creative mix of bubble wrap and printing ink, pressing onto the page to mimic the dot patterns that brought Lichtenstein’s pieces to life. This fun and hands-on approach gave our young artists a taste of both creativity and innovation as they learned about printmaking while emulating the look of comic book panels.
The resulting pieces are bold, bright, and full of the dramatic flair that makes pop art so appealing. Our Year 7’s creations are bursting with personality and colour. We’re thrilled to see how each pupil’s unique interpretation brings something fresh to this classic art style.
With their own “big bang” of creativity, our Year 7s have captured the spirit of Roy Lichtenstein and brought his style into the modern day —it’s truly a pop of inspiration!
